While wondering around with a collegue and my assistant looking for possible fresh locations at an old familiar site, Sydney Opera House, I saw the moon rise above the shells. Of coarse the house showed me yet again why it's one of my favourite Australian locations, never failing to inspire.

Vivid Sydney Light Sculptures
Vivid Sydney
One of the sculptures "Passage to happiness" by Sun Yu-Li caught my eye and I went back to shoot with model, Biannca Rose. I had not met Biannca, and she travelled quite a way to shoot in the freezing cold winter air. The Vivid Sydney event was packed, and this particular sculpture seemed to attract many enthusiastic kids and people photographing each other and climbing all over the exhibit. So between the maddening crowd (bodies getting in the frame, bodies getting between lens and model, clowns trying to get in the shot, photographers trying to get shots of Biannca, flashguns going off.... etc etc ) and the extreme cold, creating interesting images with Biannca was looking like a crazy idea. But we gave it a good shot and here are some of the results.

My assistant and stand-in model, Michael was on hand to help with the shoot and bask in the blue.

Photographing the runway show at Fashion Palette
I went to shoot Fashion Palette at the Carriageworks and see what some emerging designers were producing. The images here are not a documentry of the designs, rather a collection of my impression of the event.

Shooting for my new find's modelling portfolio, a model I found at a St George atm.
I'm always running out of cash, but this time it paid off. After stocking up at a teller machine I turned around to see this gorgeous short haired blonde waiting in line. Well, what else could I do but ...
Yes it turns out she is modelling, no surprise there, and yes she needed to build on her book. Well who doesn't ? I took a peek at Brittany's folio on her agency's website. Again I wondered where all that vibrant energy and style that I felt at the atm had got to. I see this all the time in models folios, great clothes, great makeup, great hair, but not much of the model in question that stands out.

You need strong images in your portfolio that do more than show how pretty you are if you want to stand out from the many gorgeous models that are going for the same gigs. When you are ready build your folio into a collection of images that sell you in an environment as competitive as our Fashion and Advertising industry is, contact me, I exell in making you all you can be. It all starts with that first contact.

I dropped in to see how the Miss Universe Australia 2012 heats are going.
I had the opportunity today to drop in on one of our local Miss Universe Australia 2012 heats when I met up with my studio collegue who was there as a judge. Seeing how the contestants, many of whom are aspiring or working models, handled this nerve racking event was interesting. Knowing a little of what each girl needs to put into this event makes me appreciate the effort as well as the stress they go thru in their quest to represent Australia internationaly.
When the girls that had made it through today's heat were anounced, I wondered how the judges decided who to pass on to the next round, a very difficult task with such a great array of beautiful young women.
Then of course I wonder how the girls plan the rest of their career in this competitive word of modelling. I know that the building of a great modelling portfolio is parramount, but how many girls realise that the experience gained while shooting with an experienced working photographer is really what makes the difference between a collection of pretty pictures and a book that works for the model when she or he again is competing with her/his counterparts.

Sensual beauty at water's edge, great way to start 2012
The weather was not typically summer, but the strong onshore wind added that little something extra.

Location fashion shoot with the urban texture of Balmain
Texture on texture is the theme in this urban street fashion story. Alexis has the strong presence to stand out in this environment of wood, peeling paint and full billowing skirt, in the moody soft light leakimg out from a heavy sky.
