Portfolio shoot for Julia gets of to a great start

A location portfolio shoot is always dependent on the weather, and even though the wind came out to play, the resulting images look great. Maybe even because the wind come to join in on the fun. The sun did put in an appearance, just when needed. As I had asked the weather gods for some late afternoon light, it all came together, to brighten even more Julia's great smile.

Portfolio shoots need to target the model's strengths and clearly show what she or he brings to the table. Just coming up with interesting images might please you, the model, but is it going to cut it, if your looking to get booked by those that are calling the shots.
Portfolio shots need to give information, how you can move and body shots need to give a good idea of your body shape etc. As well as creating a mood or portray an emotion that catches the attention of talent bookers. Folio images need to stand out and give clients - Agents, Photographers, Art Directors and Editors more than just your great looks, after all just relying on your pretty face doesn't count for much when beauty is an entry requirement shared by all at each casting. As they say in advertising...you need to sell the sizzle, not just the steak!

Urban fashion lingerie story shot on location in Sydney

Location fashion shoots can be a little demanding when you need to deal with the weather's blustery moods, as well as the crowds of city workers trampling through your frame. On this day we had the usual groupies that have never seen a woman before and felt the need to make up for lost time, as well as a few that thought you needed their invaluable opinion. But in the end we came away with some strong images that made up for the demanding conditions, just another day at the office.

Edgy Fashion in Urban Concrete Maze

This edgy fashion shoot came about when the weather we required deteriorated to the point that only a poor sunless sky was left. So we adapted and changed our location and wardrobe to suit. I wanted  Larissa's strong sculptured face to dominate the urban concrete location, keeping it simple so her intense look brought an extra edge to the shoot.

Artwear On Queen needed this fashion range of their most innovative Italian designers including Giovanni Cavagnia, Masnada and Isabel Benenato photographed for their local market.
These designers have been setting the trend in Milan and Europe and giving the underground fashion scene the fresh strong and refreshing boost that has made them names amongst the most creative of fashion's trend setters.

Fashion Photography often means working with the location's weather, rather than crying when the conditions are not what's wanted.

After a few shoots in recent months, working in Australia's crazy weather, I thought I'd post some images that were a direct result of working with and embracing the conditions as we found them or what they developed into. Some of the most rewarding experiences, for me come from turning things around and into emotive images.

While the images above of Alex were shot with a strong wind that was driving us crazy, this image of Carly was executed when the rain came to try us, but a little cover and the available light found in my bag, in the form of a flash/strobe did the trick. 

This image was created when the wind seemed to be too strong. So rather than go indoors and waste the gorgeous sunlight, I found a location that enabled me to put the wind to effective use. 

The strong directional movement in Larissa's pose, and the wind blowing her hair and more importantly, her skirt, are the main components that contribute to this image's power and strength.

When asked to shoot friend's Ajita and Justin's wedding, we had hoped for sunshine, but the weather Gods had other ideas. But I was prepared both with a tarp to protect Ajita's dress and for shooting in the rain. It was sprinkling and a little windy, I try to think that the Gods are trying to help me make memorable photographs, if only I'm able to embrace what they throw at me. 

I did warn Justin by saying, that whatever happens, we will get what we came to for, a memorable record of their special day, encompassing all that goes into making it so. So I thought... "I'm covered" so to speak. So rather than waiting for more umbrellas to be retrieved from the limo, I stayed ready for whatever came my way. Actually it went the wedding party's way......the gust of wind that was already flexing its muscle, (just to give me a heads up of what I must admit, I was hoping for)...the rest as they say is history. The gusting wind blew the fountain's water into our shot. That's Justin's brother seen here enjoying the dousing way too much, and oblivious of the Bride and Groom's displeasure. Soon I'll post the whole series of images in the sequence that this image is part of. The last image is awesome, so stay tuned.

Moral of this story; for me-stay alert and vigilant, ready for whatever, maybe a usefull legacy from years of shooting sport. The moral for the newly weds, with which they seamed to agree ;-whatever happens, it will truly part and parcel of your special day. And in this case it seemed to make the day's best pictures.
